The main power grid in most areas of the world is run by nuclear or coal power, or hydro power from steadily flowing water. Although these sources of power have given us dependable energy for many years, it has become more and more expensive as time goes on, and there seems to be no end in sight to the cost. The utilities will be charging even more in years to come.

An example of this is the time spent by a family away from home during the day. The system is producing much energy, especially on sunny days. The family does not use much of that power, so the excess is channeled to the utility grid and the homeowner receives credit for it. The family comes home and the sun goes down, so they may use more than what is available through their own system at the time. They can use the electric off the grid at this point, and it will cost little or nothing because of the credit they received for the excess they produced throughout the daytime.

Grants for solar panels and tax rebates make it affordable to install a solar power system in your home. The advantage to the government is the production of renewable energy and the relief of overloading on the typical utility system on a high usage day.
