Wind Energy Can Provide Energy Self-Sufficiency For North America

Who hasn’t enjoyed the soft caress of the wind against their face. There can be no one who hasn’t experienced this pleasant taste of Mother Nature but few have realized what this pleasant breeze can produce beyond that. Wind energy is the future of electricity.

Centuries have found man using the wind for his benefit. Both electrical and mechanical energy can be produced from the harnessing of wind power. Sailboats could not glide over the waters surface without the power of wind in its sails. A single windmill seen on a farm can bring forth well water to nourish the crops. Days of old saw grindstones brought into motion to make flour from wheat.

Harnessing the power of wind is now being used for the purpose of making electricity. This is done in a manner similar to a child’s pinwheel. A device called a wind turbine with enormous blades are caused to rotate on a hub by the winds power. This hub is on a shaft that enters into a geared transmission box that increases the speed of rotation. The transmission then causes the generator to turn. An applied braking system allows for blade protection should the wind speed become excessive.

One single turbine can generate enough power to completely power a home or small school. These models are adjusted in size to meet the needs required, but as mans search for new power sources increases, wind turbines located in groupings of hundreds or more are referred to as wind farms. Met with much controversy due to their looks and mans concern over possible side effects, wind turbines are beginning to take their place in U. S. Society.

Windy conditions are ideal for placement of wind turbines. The more wind there is, the more electricity can be made. One turbine has the minimum capacity to produce a 100 watts, or one kilowatt of power. This is enough to light ten 100 watt bulbs. When production is increased to 300 kilowatts, three thousand bulbs will glow. Using that as a base of multiplication for the number of turbines producing electricity now and the end result borders on staggering.

In the state of California alone, there were 11,368 wind turbines in 1999. Located in the windiest areas, the sate is home to three wind farms. You can find the locations in Altamont Pass, San Gorgonio Pass, and Palm Springs. These three wind farms are capable of lighting up the entire city of San Francisco. Now located in areas all over the United States, California still holds the distinction of the highest amount of electricity produced. The distribution of this amassed power is carried out with the use of transformers. Electricity can be sent to far away sites through power lines. The arguments in regard to turbine use of wind energy continues today. Regardless of this controversy, more and more of these turbines can be seen as we travel though the countryside.
